Zapotec Culture & Community Walk

Enjoy a free, approximately 2-hour cultural walk through the historic center of Teotitlán del Valle. Accompanied by a local guide, you will visit some of the most representative spaces of the community while discovering the history, traditions, and spirit of the Guelaguetza, based on reciprocity and sharing. We will visit the local market, the archaeological site, and the Community Museum or Cultural Center, where you will learn about part of the Zapotec heritage, the textiles, and the traditions that keep the identity of Teotitlán alive.

Textiles: Weaving & Natural Dyes

Step into the textile world of Teotitlán del Valle alongside the women's weaving cooperatives and the families who have preserved this knowledge from generation to generation. Discover how the colors of the textiles are born from natural pigments obtained from plants, minerals, flowers and insects, and learn about the ancient Zapotec symbols that appear in the designs, each one connected to nature, the community and the memory of our ancestors. Learn about the different techniques used to prepare, dye and weave the wool, and watch how the artisans transform fibers into unique rugs and tapestries using two- and four-pedal looms. More than seeing a craft process, this experience will help you understand the cultural meaning behind every color, symbol and design, and how weaving continues to be a living part of the Community.

Ancient Zapotec Peak & Landscape Hike

We start at 6:00 a.m. in the Historic Center of Teotitlán del Valle and set out on a hike to Guie-Bets, one of the community's ancestral peaks and a place of deep meaning in the Zapotec tradition. We arrive around 7:30 a.m., when the morning light begins to transform the landscape of the Valley. Along the way you will learn about some of the medicinal plants and local herbs that are part of the community's traditional knowledge, and discover the flora and fauna that inhabit the mountains and the valley. At Guie-Bets, we will talk about the ancestral relationship between the Zapotec people, nature, and the forces that give life to the territory. Here, our ancestors made offerings and rituals honoring the Sun and the Rain — elements essential to life and agriculture. More than a hike, this is an opportunity to walk the territory from a Zapotec perspective and connect with the ancestral memory of Teotitlán.

Artisanal & Ancestral Spiritual Mezcal

We leave from the Teotitlán del Valle Historical Center toward the agave fields that are part of the landscape and daily life of our communities. During the tour you will learn about the different species of agave that grow in Oaxaca and learn to recognize their characteristics, uses, and the relationship they have maintained with indigenous peoples over generations. Discover how agave is transformed into different types of mezcal and learn the particularities that distinguish each one: from the agave species and its cultivation to the traditional methods of cooking, fermentation, and distillation. We will also explore the meaning that mezcal has beyond the drink. In many Oaxacan communities it is part of important life moments, celebrations, gatherings, and reciprocity rituals. Traditional Kitchen & Market Experience

We meet in the historic center of Teotitlán del Valle and begin our experience at the local market, where we will meet those who offer the community's produce and together select fruits, herbs, vegetables, and fresh ingredients for our meal. Afterwards, we head to a traditional kitchen to prepare a representative Teotitlán dish together, learning step by step the techniques and knowledge passed down from generation to generation. During preparation, we will discover the deep relationship of Zapotec cuisine with the land and learn the importance of corn, beans, chili, and squash—fundamental elements of the food and culture of our ancestors. We will also talk about local ingredients, traditional ways of preparing them, and the meaning of sharing food within the community. More than learning a recipe, this experience invites you to sit at the table with Teotitlán and discover how history, land, and community live in our kitchen.

Spiritual Light & Candle Making

Meet a family of traditional candle makers in Teotitlán del Valle and enter a workshop where knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation. Discover how natural beeswax is carefully transformed by hand into candles used in weddings, patron-saint festivals, community celebrations, and important life moments. During the experience you will learn the artisan process, from preparing and modeling the wax to making the flowers and figures that decorate each candle, created one by one with patience and precision. We will also talk about the meaning of light and candles within community traditions, and how these objects accompany moments of celebration, gratitude, and reciprocity. From Mitla to Teotitlán: The Spiritual Journey

A private full-day journey from Oaxaca City to discover some of the places, knowledge, and traditions that are part of the Zapotec spiritual world. We will begin among the marigold (cempasúchil) fields, a flower deeply connected to our celebrations and to the memory of our loved ones. We will continue to Mitla, the ancient Zapotec center associated with ceremonial life and the connection with the world of our ancestors. Then we will return to Teotitlán del Valle, where the experience becomes more intimate and personal. We will meet a family of traditional candlemakers and discover the meaning of spiritual candles and light in community ceremonies. We will visit a family altar and learn how votive candles accompany moments of prayer, gratitude, and remembrance. We will also share in the kitchen of a local family: we will visit the market, prepare a traditional dish together, and sit down at the table to share the meal. Later we will enter the world of Zapotec textiles, discovering their symbols, colors, natural dyes, and traditional weaving techniques. We will close the day with artisanal mezcal, exploring its relationship with the land, celebrations, and community life, before heading back to your hotel in Oaxaca. Teotitlán Guelaguetza: A Full-Day Cultural Experience
