From Mitla to Teotitlán: The Spiritual Journey
The experience
A private full-day journey from Oaxaca City to discover some of the places, knowledge, and traditions that are part of the Zapotec spiritual world. We will begin among the marigold (cempasúchil) fields, a flower deeply connected to our celebrations and to the memory of our loved ones. We will continue to Mitla, the ancient Zapotec center associated with ceremonial life and the connection with the world of our ancestors. Then we will return to Teotitlán del Valle, where the experience becomes more intimate and personal. We will meet a family of traditional candlemakers and discover the meaning of spiritual candles and light in community ceremonies. We will visit a family altar and learn how votive candles accompany moments of prayer, gratitude, and remembrance. We will also share in the kitchen of a local family: we will visit the market, prepare a traditional dish together, and sit down at the table to share the meal. Later we will enter the world of Zapotec textiles, discovering their symbols, colors, natural dyes, and traditional weaving techniques. We will close the day with artisanal mezcal, exploring its relationship with the land, celebrations, and community life, before heading back to your hotel in Oaxaca. More than visiting places, this experience invites you to know Teotitlán through its people and to approach a living culture through its rituals, flavors, textiles, and ways of sharing.
